Bluffing in Poker
Bluffing has to be included in your poker game if you want to be a winner over time. All the best rated poker players in the world know how to make successful bluffs. There are good times to bluff, and there are bad times to bluff. These are some pointers regarding bluffing you should keep in kind during a poker game.
Good bluffing opportunities:
- The pot is small.
- The board looks favorable, without obvious draws.
- There are few players involved in the hand. One or two opponents, is the perfect setting.
- You have a good read on the other players in the hand.
- You have a tight table image.
- You're sitting in late position and it's checked to you.
Bad situations to bluff:
- The pot is big.
- There are obvious draws on the board.
- There are more than three players still in the hand.
- You have a loose table image. Perhaps you have been caught bluffing recently.
- You're facing bad players. This kind of player often calls with mediocre cards, and that makes them very hard to bluff.
Online bluffing
When you're playing poker at an Internet casino your opponents can't see you, and that makes bluffing a bit easier. They won't be able to spot tells that reveal what type of hand you're holding. However, as mentioned above, that doesn't mean that you should bluff recklessly. Good timing is still required.
Semi-bluffing
A semi-bluff is when you make a big bet or raise with nothing but a draw. Your hand is probably not the best at the moment, but will be if you hit the draw. This kind of play gives you two chances to win the hand. Your opponents you're might fold to your big bet/raise, or you might hit your draw. Of course, this strategy is the most effective when you're are drawing to a really strong hand, preferably the nuts (the best possible hand).
