The pace in online poker games is high, and naturally you will see a lot of flops when you’re playing Internet poker games. Each poker hand is unique, and it’s often very difficult to say what’s right or wrong in a specific situation. These are general guidelines for some of the most common flop scenarios. Hopefully they will help you to play winner poker.
Top pair
If you flop top pair with a good kicker you’re in a strong position. However, you should make sure to bet in this situation, since you want to force the players who missed to flop out of the pot. Top pair is a strong hand, but not strong enough to slow play. If you allow players to stay in the hand cheaply you run the risk of being beaten. If you bet with your top pair and there is a lot of raising, you have to be careful. If you think another player has you beat you should fold.
Two pair
It’s good to flop two pair, but you’re still vulnerable, so you should make a bet. If someone else bets before it’s your turn to act you should re-raise. In these cases you have to watch out for straight draws and flush draws. Two pair is a tough hand to fold, but if you’re certain that someone has you beat you should of course throw your cards away. If you’re not sure where you stand an option is to slow down and just call all the way to the river.
Three of a kind
If you flop three of a kind and there are no straight or flush draw possibilities you’re in a position to slow play. This is a good way to maximize your winnings. If there are draws on the board you have to protect your hand by betting.
Straight and flush draws
These hands do best in multi-way pots. In general you need at least two more players in the hand, because otherwise these drawing hands are not profitable in the long run. Another thing to keep in mind is that it is preferable to be drawing to the nuts (the best possible straight or flush).
If you miss the flop
When you miss the flop you should fold if another player makes a bet. The exception is of course if you have an over pair in your pocket. For example, if you’re holding a pair of Jacks and the highest card on the board is a 9.
